  • Jeep - never again - 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee

I have the 4.0 liter, 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo. Had 65,000 K when I bought it. Worst car I have ever owned. I am shopping for a replacement now. I have replaced catalytic convertor twice, out again. Cracked exhaust manifold, hoses, radiator, crank shaft sensor (going out again I believe), idle motor also. Have to hit starter 6 to 8 times to connect. I am 64 years old and put 5,000 miles on it a year..so rough treatment is not the excuse.

Some normal things hav gone wrong with it, but most have been after 90,000 miles, and are expected. I love the jeep and I want to buy American cars, while many people gave me a hard time about doing that- my American car has outlasted their foreign cars.

  • Fun Car.....Poor Reliability - 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee

I bought my Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 4x4 brand new and had absolutely no problems with it until I hit 70k miles. Then everything started to fall apart (radiator, thermostat, heated seats, shocks, hoses, belts, and a clicking noise is coming from the transfer case which make me afraid to take it in for fear that the dealer will tell me to replace the transmission). Other than that, its been a great car, and I still get have as much fun driving it as I did the day I bought it.

I could live in this car. I sleep in it and eat in it and talk on the phone in it and my kids have changed clothes in it. I bought my first one and the car salesman wrecked it after I drove it 1 day and I refused to take anything but a like model. I had to settle for a different interior color but I was o.k with it. The square cargo space is roomy and the front seats are perfect for us. I love that it adjusts the seats and mirrors for us since my husband is tall, and I am not. Thankfully he does not drive it much.

  • In my opinion...... - 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Granted it is a 96 and with age it will ultimately depreciate as will any other automobile out there. So that being said youd typically want to buy something thats reliable. This car is anything but reliable in my opinion. Its broke down twice in a year. Ive had a series of problems which has cause me numerous headaches. A helpful tip... if anyone is looking to purchase this Jeep I would advise them 100% not to. Spend alittle extra money and purchase a used Nissan Pathfinder. Its an outstanding SUV.

  • A Great Car for its Time - 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Ive had this car for nearly 5 years now and have really been quite happy with it. I did need to replace the AC compressor twice... a common problem, Ive read. Other than that, if you are perhaps a bit more aggressive in changing differential, transmission, and transaxle fluids then the manufacturer recommends, these are great cars on and off the road. Other minor problems: Mirror memory Seatbelt sensor ABS sensors (adjustment needed only)

  • Not sure what to think - 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee

This vehicle has been fun to drive but has had problems since day 1. Bought it at 55,000 miles, it had the 318 V-8 engine in it. Dealership could never fix engine "pinging." Rod bearings went, then entire engine had to be replaced at 101,000 miles. It was my wifes vehicle and she used it to commute back and forth a short distance to work. This vehicle has never been driven hard or abused. We also had trouble with the 4WD slipping out of 4WD low--wouldnt engage. The CD player quit working, radio shorts out. Sunroof leaks during big rainstorms. Vehicle has bled us dry for repair bills. Gets 15.6 mpg. Trannie seems to shift back and forth unnecessarily when going up hills.

Most dependable and sturdy vehicle I have owned in years. Actually like it better then my Lincoln.

  • Overall Good Quality - 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Second Grand Cherokee that my wife and I have owned. First was a 93 with the I-6 cylinder which was a little under powered for towing a medium sized trailer (17). The 96 has the 5.2 liter (318 cid) which has been more than adequate. The only problem we have had with the vehicle is an automatic transmission rebuild at 100, 000 miles. I felt this was totally unacceptable for a transmission to fail at this mileage and the response from the dealership was less than what we had hoped for.

  • DECENT VEHICLE - 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Overall, a good SUV. Very little trouble until now. Recently replaced the water pump, fuel pump, and Battery. This is its third Battery. I cant complain though, I see this as normal wear and tear items for a vehicle with 175k. The only complaints I have is with the door panels. They started to come apart at 100k. All 4 panels will run you around $600.00, and you install. Exhaust header is also a problem. It cracks and develops a leak. There are aftermarket headers available. I found Gibson headers to be the most desirable. These are direct replacement, and bolt right in. All in all, I like my Grand.
